Front Porch Tales written by Barbara L. Vanderstel
and illustrated by her husband Bill Vanderstel tells her family’s history being
brought up in a small rural town in Canada, near Saskatoon, during the 50’s.
Her vivid childhood memories come to life in this endearing true-life tale of
rural farm life. Surely, life on a farm was not for the faint at heart, as the
family endured harsh Canadian winters, yet special memories of country dances,
summer time, and daily life on their families’ farm offers readers insight into
an era and history long gone. The author relishes and savors her life journey,
presenting a glimpse of her life that reminds others of what is really
important in this life (and still should be): family, hard work, faith in God
and community.
For those living in modern-day America, life may be hard to
imagine living on a family farm, surrounded by wheat fields and being one of
the biggest chicken ranchers in the community. This was the case of the
author’s life that encompasses captivating tales of Canadian farm life. There
was never a dull day, and one will appreciate all the modern conveniences we now
enjoy (such as washing machines, running water coupled with modern-day heating
and air-conditioning). The town only had only one schoolhouse that taught
grades 1 thru 8, and no high school. The author paints a picture of a much
different life from city life. Her life story continues through the high school
years, giving insight into how hard it was to be pulled away from family just
to be able to go to school.
Focusing readers on the heart of life and the journey, the
author keeps to a theme of love, family, faith in God, hope, perseverance and
gives others encouragement to not quit. Filled with pictures of family and
relatives that enhance the memories, the book is also intertwined with poems
and scriptures that bring light, hope and meaning to the journey of life. The
author also helps readers focus on God’s purpose and plan for their life,
encouraging all to make up their mind and to keep it set according to
Colossians 3:2 (NIV) “Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.”
